Hi Guys,

Need some advice if you don't mind.

I have created a database in Access (As per my 'Clients' requirements) as part of my dissertation. I now need to create an interface to this so that it can be used over the intranet/internet.

I need to create a login screen, a couple of input screens, and a variety of reports that need to be run.

The system tracks Assets (in this case Computer equipment). I need to be able to query the database in a variety of ways (either by machine, user or department).

In my "Machine" table I have the following entities:

Machine_Id (Primary Key)
Type_Id -> Links to Type Table
User_Id -> Links to User Table (Which also stores the Dept/Site_Id of the user.
Dept/Site_Id -> Links to Dept/Site Table
Serial Number
etc

I'd like to set it up so that if I enter in a user_Id it populates the Dept/Site_Id with whatever has been stored in the User_Id table.

Does this make sense???

Whats the best way to go about this?? I'm not really a programmer!

To make it even more complicated the login / search / update screens need to be accessed via both a pda interface and a normal desktop/laptop. There is no requirement for reports to be run on the pda though. (Could mean 2 different interfaces?)

Thank You all SO much!

Phill

In that case you shouldn't have picked a programming job for your dissertation!

Try here,

www.vbaexpress.com, some very good VBA programmers on there, its easy to learn.

But as has been said, why do a programming project if you're not a programmer???

Had to! I'm studying BSc (Hons) Business Information Technology. Had to run a project from the initiation through to the development to a product. My skills lay in Project management not development so hopefully I should pick up more marks with the documentatin then the programming!

Indeed, access uses VBA so you'll have to learn that. You're gonna have to create a whole new program to view it on a PDA though - unless the PDA's have windows/access functions?. Best bet would be to create it as a website and use PHP as mentioned here...

Surely the best way to do this would be through web access? Only need to write one interface (web pages) and can choose a lang that suits you - from ASP (VB) to JSP (Java) to PHP. All can access Access. I'd put the database functionality into stored procedures too rather than wireing them into the web pages (good for maintenance, reusability and security).

If you need to graph reports then there are PHP modules that will do that or you can 'buy' some commercial software.

From experience I'd have avoided using Access and used something proper e.g. MySQL or Postgres (unless you have access to Oracle or MSSQL. Access is very limited.

Sounds like a day's worth of codeing for a competent/experienced bod or a month of pain for a non-coder

Cheers Guys,

I was heading towards a web based solution already so it looks like I was on the right track.

I would use .net if you can, purely because its easier to get the code working with the pda.

And ASP.NET is good fun with all it's drag and drop wizzbits!

As for the database. I'm no expert, but surely if you set a foreign key between your tables the you will be able to link records and maintain data integrity?

Plus I think you can download it for free here http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/

I have started mocking up the database in access for you so email me if you want it.
