They *are* laptops! Memory is easy to replace, either just under the keyboard or undo 4 screws on the memory compartment door on the base, depending on exact model. Hard disks are a bit more involved. I've never done it, but I know it is perfectly possible if you need to.

Thanks Tog,looking at it I think an external firewire drive is the easier option.

Ram is usually the easiest.Disks are sometimes a pain. It looks a doddle to do the disk with the instructions on the Apple site.Cheers Mattley.

If you have steady hands and a good set of torx drivers, this site has a comprehensive disassembly guide for virtually every job you can think of...

I recently swapped the hard drive in my 12" Powerbook using instruction from Ifixit.com.

All went well but I did bust a couple of my F-keys. When removing them, pull from the top and bottom instead of the left and right - they come off much easier that way.

Something else to do - as you disassemble it, label where the screws came from. There are a lot of tiny screws that are all virtually the same length. However, I put the wrong screws in the cover to the compartment where the RAM goes and becuase they were fractionally too long the computer wouldn't boot - presumably one of the screws shorting out on the circuit board underneath.

RAM source of choice is crucial.com
- Good quality (highly unlikely to have compatibility problems with Apple's very fastidious RAM standards)
- Idiot guide on the site
- Keen prices (far cheaper than Apple's exorbitant price)
- Guarantee
- Fast delivery
Tip: they send recorded, so consider getting delivery to the office.
