Is this a good laptop ? It is certified for Solidworks so I assume that it will run it well but I believe that there is a new operating system coming out from Microsoft called vista ? Is it likely that this will run it ? ( as far as I can see there are no specs available for it) It looks like it is the nicest laptop out there and there are a few on ebay for £1300-1500, but I'm a bit worried about it being obsolete in 3 months, and I need to keep up with the latest software to get certification before I graduate ( it apparently is a big deal for the big design consultancies for some reason )

I have it from Redmond that anything that runs XP reasonably well WILL run Vista quite nicely, its just that there will be a sliding scale of "on by default" eye candy: i.e. if your graphics card isnt all it could be, then the Aero stuff may be switched off etc etc. If its bang up to date hardware you want, buy a pencil

Aside from that, your software itself may well prove the limitation, as they are bound to start using the new OS features in the next release, when older hardware may struggle to keep up. Best bet, if you graduate this year, go for this, if its in 2008, go for this, then start saving...
