Yeah, theres a specific bit of software too, that I admittedly forget the name of, that will correct the pops and crackles and hiss...

I've done this using a phono-to-phono lead connected fom the headphone socket on my stereo to the line-in on my pc sound card. Then use a prog like Goldwave to record to .wav or .mp3. Goldwave has a number of filters for adjusting volume levels and reducing hiss etc.

Wave repair (Google it) is a de-popping prog.

I dont'think my sound card is overly good... realtec 97 I think
Rest of PC is pretty good though so is there anything that could utilise USB ports?

If you want to maximise sound quality you'll want a decent sound card and possibly a pre-amp for the record deck as the line level usually isn't sufficient to go straight into the sound card. This is why amps have a dedicated phono input for record decks.

It really comes down to how important quality is to you. AC97 is heavily bus and processor dependant, and might be OK if the whole PC is up to spec.

To be honest, my advice would be to get a standalone CD-Recorder for your Hi-Fi and record your vinyls and tapes that way. The quality will probably be higher than a PC and there will be a whole less arsing around.
