I will probably be needing to get one of these soon, but I was just trying to figure out how everything went together.

With the wireless router do I need an adsl modem? Or does the wireless router act as the modem?

I am asking this because at home we have one of those stupid bt voyager adsl modems that only has a USB plug as an output, and as you are all aware a wireless router doesn't have a USB socket.

Can I just plug the router into the telephone line with one of those microfilter things and be done with it?

Thanks for any help,

Rob

Thanks for that, but I just need answers to my questions really, as I only need a cheap router, like 35 quid. Just wanted to know if it will work or not.

At least its an option if worst comes to worst.

Cheers BB

From my understanding if you are connect to BB with BT you need the kit or like above.
I think a router with modem in would be alot more money?

Connections are bt line-voyager-router

the usb on the voyager just becomes a power lead i think.

You can get both types - modem built in or ethernet in. The first type is what you need, the descriptions will usually include reference to a modem, rj11 port or ADSL. The second type is usually for cable modem use, would be no use to you. £35 is scraping the barrel a bit IMHO but might be do-able on ebay...

Get an ADSL modem, I have a Netgear DG834GT. It's a lot faster than the BT modem as well.

you cant connect the USB modem you have to a router - the router will require an ethernet connection not USB

better off with an all in one device - Netgear DG834G or DG834GT or DG834PN...the DG834G is very popular and has been around a while so is generally very reliable - keep an eye on Amazon and PC World for offers

I beg to differ, I have just done it. using the telephone type lead.the usb goes from router to pc for power.

eh? you have a USB modem with a USB port to interface to the PC.

you have a router that has no USB port on the WAN side (or none at all)

The USB modem only has one other interface and thats for the phone line

what are you connecting to what? (what model modem etc)

Some USB modems DO also have an ethernet port - thats different...but generally these are single port routers...and connecting 2 routers together isnt recommended as it can cause problems for the novice...especially if you want to start using applications that want to traverse 2 NAT firewalls......

Can be done both ways. But with just a router you need the computer with the modem turned on as the computer accesses the internet, with a combined modem/router then the modem accesses the internet and the primary computer can be turned off and the other computers can still access the internet.

USB to PC and phone to wall socket....errrmm...thats exactly how you normally set up a modem !

the original question was can you add a router to that configuration and the answer is no - because the wireless router needs an ethernet connection.

So you have to throw away the USB modem and get an all in one box OR get an ADSL ethernet single port modem + router

Yeah you right bogie Thats how it was originally set up. Dont know why but friend had the netgear one attached as above and the voyager... dont know how that was working, I suppose as the desktop was hardwired and the laptops where using the netgear router/modem.

Sorry for any confusion

If you are on ADSL I can recommend the 3Com OfficeConnect Wireless Router as seen here :

www.3com.com/products/en_US/detail.jsp?tab=features&pathtype=purchase&sku=3CRWDR100A-72

I've got two of them and they are great. Only £49 from dabs at the moment as well including either a USB or PCMCIA wireless adapter. Good value.

I binned the BT modem and bought a DLink 604T Router/Modem.
Works brilliantly. A few issues setting up but that was due to my lack of knowledge rather than the hardware itself.

don't go to pc world they're a big rip off - buy direct from dabs or ebuyer - I'll add linksys wireless routers to the bunch as well.

If you need advice for specific models let me know (just PM me), I'm fitting these by the dozen lately, easy to set up too.

I was just going to go there to have a look at them.

So to replace my voyager modem I would need a wireless modem router? An all in one jobby? Would that still work with the BT dialup thing?

you dont use the bt dial up thing..another advantage is that the connection is always on with a router.

so you uninstall all the BT software and modem, plug in the new modem/router...and run its set-up wizard....basically instead of putting your ADSL username/password in the 'dial-up' utility you put it in the router...the router auto-dials for you and you dont see it.

All you do is open internet explorer and you are on-line...just as if you were on a 'real' network in the office ........
