Stopping Limewire loading all the time
Discussion
Hi all,
I have LimeWire installed on my laptop, and whilst I do use this program occasionally it is not something that I use daily or even weekly as a matter of course.
For some reason the program loads everytime I start up my computer. I find this annoying as it does slow down the start-up time by a fair amount. Not only that, the program then see's fit to 'reload' every ten minutes or so. If I close LimeWire down the program then reloads all by itself after 10 mins or so. Even if I simply minimise LimeWire and get on with what I'm doing, I find that the program still reloads itself after a certain length of time. It's becoming very annoying as it's slowing the computer down too much when it shouldn't be.
Anyone have any idea how I would stop LimeWire loading up on start-up - and indeed reloading whenever it likes - without completely removing the program altogether (as it is used sometimes)?
Many thanks.

I have version 4.9.30 and I've just checked the settings you advised. The box for start-up isn't even ticked, so it is automatically starting up regardless of this option. Sometimes, on occasion, it even loads up twice! I also notice that sometimes there are two identical icons for LimeWire (the green thingy) on the icon bar on the bottom-right of my screen, although usually one will dissapear when I place my cursor above it.
Whilst I realise there are other similar programs available (I used to use eDonkey), I have found LimeWire to be the best program I have used to do what I need it to. I must admit though that, should my problems continue, I will get rid of the program (or at least update to version 5).

Wierd. Mine isn't checked and it doesn't exhibit the same behaviour.
The only other thing it might be is that its installed as a service. I can't remember the exact key in the registry but a search for the .exe name in Regedit will turn it up.
I take it there's no shortcut to it in your Startup items list?

Start>Run>msconfig.exe
This will give you a list of everything that startsup on start up and where it starts up from.
I've done this and, oddly enough, I can't even find LimeWire on the list. I managed to find Skype and uncheck that from startup, as it was another program that was doing my head in.
The Dude - I do have a shortcut icon for LimeWire on my Programs menu on the Start buttom, although I've never used it because LimeWire is always on!
As I've said before, LimeWire loads itself every ten mins or so anyway, even if it has already loaded it reloads. Therefore it might not be on a startup list, but just loads because it always WANTS to load for some reason.
I reckon I'm just gonna have to bin it and download the latest version.

That really is bizarre behaviour. It almost virus-like in its persistence.
Re : Starup items. There's a group in the Start Menu specifically called Startup (Start->Programs->Startup)). Check that (right-click start button, Explore) but I'm not really convinced that's the problem.
Have a search in Regedit for the key "Software/Microsoft/CurrentVersion/Run" and see if its listed in there. Though I suspect anything that would show up there would also bein the msconfig.exe list too.
To be honest, uninstalling it is probably your best option. Sounds like something has gone a bit wrong somewhere.
Well nothing seemed to work, and I couldn't find LimeWire listed anywhere that would suggest an auto-startup was occuring, so I decided to simply uninstall the program. I did it properly through the uninstall option, and all the visible elements of the program are now gone, and the computer runs ALOT quicker.
However...
Every five mins or so a window opens up with the following information:
"One or more necessary files appears to be invalid. This is generally caused by a corrupted installation. Please try downloading and installing Limewire again. If the problem persists, please copy and paste the message below and send it to bugs@limewire.com. Thank you."
The message itself is a load of information regarding my system, including my Windows version, etc.
I have tried to reinstall Limewire (a later version) and it does so fine, but the problems I was having before (i.e. constant loading and reloading of Limewire automatically) still persist. I then uninstalled Limewire again, and I still get the above error window popping up all the time. It's got me really baffled as, because Limewire shouldn't be on my system anyway, I don't know how to get rid of the error box once and for all. I've tried restarting the computer several times to no avail.

Hmmmm. I'd run an adware/spyware cleaner on the machine before reinstalling. Though I seem to remember Limewire is supposed to be ad/spy free.

Clean it up, see if it still happens.
There's also the possibility that you've got a virus. If you have AV software installed, make sure it's up-to-date. If not, there's a free online on here;
