I just bought my dad a new computer which has a digital tv card. It duly picks up all the freeview channels from a an ariel and happily records from tv to hard disk and then to DVD. I can play these back on the PC but they will not play on either of the DVD players we have. I am currently using the windows xp media software that came with the PC. What should I do to make the DVD write in a format the players can read?

Depends what format the files are being saved in, 'normal' DVD's run MPEG2 format your DVD player may support other formats, such as DivX or MPEG4, your files need to be in a format supported by your DVD Player.

You can get conversion tools off the net.

You're going to want to convert the files to Mpv file with corresponding wav file, then use Nero to burn them to a disc. I think you can use Nero.

Yes, and use DVD-R s, they seem to be the most universally acceptable for standard DVD players.

You need DVD authoring software. Burning the footage direct to DVD does not work. I currently use Adobe Encore 2.0, but there are cheaper alternatives with less bells and whistles...

Sorry to hi-jack this thread, but it has got me worried.

I'm about to buy a PC for home use, one of the reasons being that I want to store digital pictures on DVD and view on TV.

Does this mean that if I store digital pictures on a DVD I can't simply bung the DVD into my DVD recorder to view on TV? Or, for example, take the DVD to a friends house and show them on their DVD player?

Some set top boxes do and some don't (HiMat ones will allow it). Either way, it's a bit more complicated than using Windows to copy pictures to your DVD (which it won't do anyway. Windows won't write files to DVD-R natively - you need add on software)

If you copy the picture files to a cd then they should play on your dvd player..
