pc speakers not working

There is probably a simple explanation for this, but feeling dumb right now...lol

Switched on pc, speakers ok, tried playing a cd using creative playcenter and no sound.
Used windows media and the cd played.
Tried real player...silence.
Back to Windows media and silent.

Restarted the pc twice and reinserted cables, still nothing.

When I turn the speaker power on it makes a small pop, not the usual 'omph' when switched on.

What shall I try next?

Have you looked at the master volume settings? (Contol panel - sounds and audio devices - advanced)

I ran a speaker test...silence, then noticed digital output only selected, so I unselected that and bingo.

I have sound back, I must have selected the digital box by accident.
