Bit torrent is free.
It's basically just another peer - peer sharing program.
You install a program e.g. Bit Comet and then use websites such as torrentspy.com or piratebay. You then search on these sites for what you want to download.
In my experience it is better and faster than limewire, but limewire is easier to use.
Also some ISPs are limiting bandwidth that you can use for torrents as they are becoming too popular and using up over 50% of ISP bandwidth.
Torrent sites seem to be closing down a lot lately though, so wether it will last or not I dont know.
If you just want music i would stick to limewire, for movies I would say bit torrent.
Also with bit torrent it downloads different parts of the file from different people, so if you are downloading a song you cannot listen to it until it is finished.
Hope this helps,

and punch in the IT crowd, if it comes up then you only need to install Bit Comet, just google for it.
I like bit torrent for TV shows. Got off centre from it which no one seems to have heard of!

Yep download the torrent,
this is the file that basically tells you what is in the torrent and where it can get those files.
You also need a program called Bit Comet, I dont have a url for it (just stick it in google), you install and run Bit Comet and open the torrent file you download. This then operates like limewire
