Now then Sportsfans,

A friend of mine has recently bought a cheapo laptop from Dell, the only thing that he's having a problem with is getting it to play DVDs. The supplied software (Sonic) seems to be mis-installed as it kept on demand a non-existant CD to be inserted to find a missing file.

I've foolishly volunteered to download him a freebie DVD player (as he's only on dial-up at the moment).

I've looked on download.com and the only applications that come up all seem to have bad reviews either for usability or that they install spyware.

Any recommendations?

'Region Free' is about the only feature that would be desirable.

Videolan player?

www.videolan.org

I think it plays DVD; it does everything else. I'd check, but I don't have a DVD to hand.

The Windows Media Player is no good as you need to buy a decoder to work with it.

Any other suggestions?
