A honey pot is a trap to give what looks like spammers an easy target. It isn't a real site but allows you to collect information about methods and access paths into an organisation

Looks like a site containing loads and loads of fake e-mail addresses to keep spammers busy. Not sure how effective it will be though....

Cheers, I now understand a lot more, however ...

The addresses we hand out are specially designed to look like regular addresses but any mail sent to them is immediately routed to our mail servers. Because each address is unique to the visitor and the moment in time the spamtrap was visited, if we begin receiving mail at an address we handed out then we can know the exact moment and IP address that originally stole the address.
The addresses on the site I pointed to are constant so I'm still not 100% sure as to the purpose of the site.

You can make the mail server that handles the fake addresses respond r-e-a-l-l-y s-l-o-w-l-y to incoming mail, so that it takes the spammer several minutes to send a spam instead of fractions of a second, thereby preventing them from spamming anyone else during that time. This is known as a Teergrube which I think is Dutch for tar pot. Not as much fun as tracing the spam to its source and then disembowelling the spammers with a button hook, but rather easier to do.

I suspect that none of this is designed to stop spammers directly but rather that these guys are harvesting as much spam as they can possibly get their hands on, so that they can test existing and also build more effective anti-spam technologies.

Yep the anti-spam stuff we use has a honeypot option, where basically anything coming into it is classed as definite spam and fed back to the bayes database for learning. Its nifty
