long story short, my cpu heatsink has somehow snapped its mounting lugs on the mobo and fell off. Im now running the pc on the floor just so i can use it.

Does anyone know how i can either:

a. find a replacement heatsink mounting bracket

or

b. go about getting the mobo replaced under warranty as its only 7 months old. its a gigabyte GA-K8NSC-939 and was bought on ebuyer if it makes any odds.

many thanks

I swapped a gigabyte a few months ago, IIRC you had the option of either dealing with Gb direct or letting the retailer do it (which took longer) so it's up to you really. www.giga-byte.co.uk

Do you mean the plastic mounting bracket around the cpu base under the fan? Or the lugs on the CPU ZIF socket?

If its the 1st one, buy a new fan (bout £6-7 for a reasonable one, unless you are overclocking!!), most new Athlon64 fans come with a base.

One I bought recently did:

Cooling Fan

If its the ZIF socket then you're knackered and its a new motherboard.

You should be able to unscrew the black bracket. The white things look like caps, so should come off. I replaced the one on mine, as the upgraded heat sink came with a new bracket, so I would probably recommend buying a new heatsink.

Hope this helps,

ben

A few tricks I've heard for getting the gunge off are, credit card to scrape most of it off and then clean it up with IPA.
