Bought a new game, it's running a bit slow, so I thyought I would have a crack at configuring the BIOS to recognise my AMD Athlon processor correctly. Ever since I've had it (about two years!) it has claimed I've got a 1050Mhz in there when it's actually a 3000. It also sets the RAM frequency to 100MHz when my stuff is supposed to be 400MHz.

Have spent about three hours on this so far . . . I have learned a lot by searching the net etc but evidently I'm missing something!

My motherboard is an Asus A7N8X-X, which will work perfectly happily at an FSB of 400MHz apparently. It is running on a recent BIOS driver, v. 1009, which people don't seem to be having any problem with. I have checked the FSB jumper on the board is set up to allow BIOS selection of FSB, not the default setting, and even tried removing it altogether which was suggested.

My chip is code number AXDA3000DK4VE, which apparently is an AMD Athlon XP 130nm 3000. Supposed to run at external frequency 200MHz, giving an FSB of 400MHz. Supposed to use a 10.5x frequency multiple, giving a processor speed of 2100MHz.

I have got into the BIOS no problems, but if I try and set the External Frequency to anything other than 100Mhz, when I do "Save changes and Exit", then monitor powers off as if the computer has shut down, but then the computer stays powered up and beeps at me every three seconds until I reset it (have left it ten or fifteen minutes before reset and it just hangs like that). When it powers back up, processor speed comes up as 1050MHz again, and it gives me an error message saying something like "did not finish loading, frequency set to safe speed, press Del to enter BIOS and set frequency" - no option to continue to windows or anything else. When I go into the BIOS from this message screen, it's exactly the same - setting the frequency to anything other than 100MHz just starts the cycle again. If I remove the FSB jumper from the motherboard (as suggested on one of the forums), it behaves identically, except it doesn't beep while it's hanging. Things like VCore voltage (1.65V) in the BIOS check out OK, it looks like everything else is right that I can see.

Anyone got any ideas what I'm doing wrong? The computer works as it is, but obviously I want it running full throttle, not just 30%!

Other info - running Windows XP, graphics card is Nvidia 6800GT with 256MB memory.

Write down the sequence of beeps when it fails to boot up...they do actually mean something.

Have a look here

Is there a BIOS update available? Are you sure your RAMs up to it? Can you try one stick at a time? (It won't dual page with one stick, but should clock up), Have you got the RAM in the right slots for Dual channel mode? (Again, This shouldn;t stop the RAM clocking up :? )
