Hi Folks

One of my clients has got a problem. Winfax has fallen over goodstyle since XP SP2 went on the host PC (they use winfax on a host with the modem and on two other machines as clients, accessing the messages on the host).

It still receives fine but there's a problem with the nost/client networking. It's a known problem and in spite of working through Symantec's list of fixes, it isn't looking good. (Normal networking functions fine, it's just the way Winfax uses the RPC server)

So...

Do we know of any other fax solutions - similar to Winfax, particularly in price - that support a couple of client machines hung off the host?

Cheers - PBF

I've encountered that SP2 problem a few times - the instructions from Symantec do work, trust me! There's also a patch for the issue now, but I've had no luck with that. Just change the DCOM & firewall settings according to the instructions...

I've used and recommend Zetafax to my clients. I struggled with WinFax for some time (going back a few years now). I then tried Zetafax. It's one of those software products that just works, and works brilliantly. Don't know how much WinFax is now, but a starter edition of Zetafax for five users is approx. £500.

Thanks all, I'll bear those in mind.

I actually got it working this morning

Having tried all the fixes from Symantec, including a link to the hidden patch for version 10.04 (if you buy winfax it'll only be 10.03 at best!). Not a chance... all the firewall & DCOM settings changed but to no avail (they had problems when they initially went to SP2, but the DCOM settings change cured that). [Edit] Just noticed that my original post made it look like this only happened as soon as they went to SP2, no I jumped through that set of hoops months ago! This 'happened overnight' with the user claiming to have changed nothing. Yeah right...

Turned out that it was an upgrade they did from Norton AV 2005 to 2006 that caused the problem. The same manufacturer as winfax of course!

So if you're still having problems with Winfax, turn off the worm protection in NAV and if STILL problems, roll back to SP1...

I've strongly suggested that we seriously need to talk about their security options when they add broadband into the mix..!

At which point I will be trying to get them to move to another fax product I reckon!
