Whenever i plug a camera or memory stick into a USB port when the computer is already on?? It's fine if I plug them in before i boot up, but when the PC is already on the it immediately freezes, mouse pointer goes nowhere, and i have to reboot by switching the power off and on again?

Introducing a new device while windows is running is more complex than you'd think. If it's there when Windows is started thats just easier to cope with. However you should be able to do it.
What version of Windows are you using?

And

Are you running the latest drivers for your mainboard?

I am running Windows XP, but the computer itself is quite old - had a new hard dirve and XP installed about 3 years ago, and i did have to update a few drivers then, so i will give it a go

Even with a "new" OS like XP, all sort of detritus builds up in the driver files over time and they can conflict with each other. It would be well worth backing up your data files and reinstalling the OS from scratch, it will be faster and generally more reliable too.
