Broadband Speed Test
Discussion
Hi chaps and chapets,
Anyone know of a tool to test the speed of a broadband line.
I'm with BT and lately its reverted back to dial up speeds, very painful!
Had a quick search on here, but it seems http://speedtest.bt.com no longer exists.
Thanks

I use this one:
www.speedtest.ndo.com/initialmeter
Following on from this, use this tutorial:

If the bt speedtest is functioning well, but the others are not, it's an isp prob. If the bt one is slow, then there's an exchange issue.

Best one I have found is Dan Elwell's speed test utility, its actually a small programme that you download and install and then it runs on your computer.

If your speed tests come back ok but browsing is slow...
- are you low on memory (and therefore caching everything you do)?
- related to the above, is anything else slow?
- update virus and spyware and run checks and cleanup
- have you got any P2P software running that could be hogging your bandwidth?
Could be any of the above strangling your system
HTH

Cheers all, I'll give the other ones a go this evening, see if they report the similar speeds.
- are you low on memory (and therefore caching everything you do) - memory looks fine, 700mb free and no disk activity.
- related to the above, is anything else slow - no just seems to be the inernet.
- update virus and spyware and run checks and cleanup - i'll give this a whirl.
- have you got any P2P software running that could be hogging your bandwidth? I did have, that is also running a lot slower than usual, even with this disabled the internet is still slow.
think the virus and spyware may be a good pointer.

thats cos it's http://speedtester.bt.com/
done loads lately to see if the ADSL Max is working correctly - best thing to do is downlaod the XP SP2 file, that actually seems to max out connection speeds and gives a good indication of download speed.
