Not sure what i need for this

cable into house from ntl will be likely to have the 2Meg broadband,
planning on getting feed into cupboard under stairs and then connecting wireless router on to this to allow internet access throughout the house.

setting up will be fine no fears there, but not sure what hardware i need really, want to be able to transmit throughout the house, but does anyone know what type of router and costs i would be looking at, or is there a useful link to go through, lots of options on line at the moment and getting a little swamped with all these things to look at and not really knowing what is better than what.

cheers for help

Lots of useful info here: www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk

That's where I did my research before buying.

I got a Buffalo wireless router - very easy to use, very reliable, yours for a small fee as I don't use it any more!

Another netgear user here. Wireless virgin until Xmas this year. Bought myself one of these www.netgear.com/products/details/WGT624.php running the wireless link at 54 Mps and have had no problems with it at all.

I've had netgear fro 2 years now ..all OK.Easy to set up and seems reliable ie doesn't give any drop out or other such stuff.I suppose a lot depends on your adsl line and the topography of where you use the Wireless network.

I had an original grey Netgear DG834G and it worked fine, then died after maybe 18 months. I replaced it with the newer white one, and the wireless access never worked reliably. I exchanged that one for a Belkin (which wouldn't have been my first choice, but was all the local shop had in stock) and it's worked fine for six months so far.

I think at that price point they're all much of a muchness.

netgears do seem to a be a bit flaky at times. we had one that went south recently, didn't want to work its adsl port. binned it and replaced it with a 834PN which does the job.

put a linksys equiv on site at one of our offices the other week though, nice bit of kit but a begger to set up. after several threats it started working. i dont like undocumented features, and no where in the manual was the requirement to threaten the router "work or you're gonna die" command appear. the netgear interface is alot better in that respect, although the linksys seemed to have a greater depth of options.

where the netgear scored big time over the linksys though was in one particular feature which i need. essentially i want some mac addresses to get the same ip each time they boot up on dhcp, and i create port transalation rules so i can get to difference boxes remotely over vnc. the linksys was very limited in this manner, whereas the netgear was very easy to make it do that.

if i had the choice, I'd be going netgear again.
