Ok , i'll put this to the PH massive as I can't make me mind up.

I have tons of RAW photo files, video and music I need to store on Hard Disc and need lots of space for future growth.

I have a Desktop PC, Laptop and Broadband through a wireless router.

Do I ?

1. Get a 1TB Buffalo Terastion ?
(with the added advantage of RAID redundancy)

or

2. Buy an 500gb internal HDD ?
(quicker connection to desktop)

what do ya think ?

Simple.

How would you feel if you LOST the data

if it wouldnt hurt, then go internal
if it would hurt a little, go internal x 2 with Raid (windows will do software raid)
if it would hurt alot, go external with hardware raid

there is one other option, but its only for rich people with Astons!

do both!

Get the internal drive for speed, and backup to the external device

Now someone else has said it, is it sinking in yet?

interesting concept, but

Garry Glitter , PC World comes to mind...

I DON'T MEAN ME OF COURSE, but I wouldn't want my personal photos/data anywhere else.
Ok it's secure, but just the thought.

(somehow don't think I explained that too well)

Give that man a smaller shovel

On a serious note have you seen the terrastation pro? Easily swappable drives now and it doesn't look like one of those mini frdges

Storage Rental 250 GB £ 753.50
VAT £ 131.86
Total Monthly Charge* £ 885.36

Ok, it may be mission critical data storage, but there is another way...

Last year due to shit health I decided to:
a) Write a video will.
b) Backup and archive my important stuff to hard disk.
c) Yes, that includes all my photos, funny's and mp3's
d) Got all my company stuff on there as well.

So I filled nearly two 300 gig drives (mirrored), put them back in the anti-static bags with the foam around, then deposited them at Metropolitan Safe Deposits safety deposit box in the vault

Adds a whole new meaning to data vault

Cost?

£50 pa.

Entrepreneur? oh

You could rent a Dedicated server for less than that

Hmm.. just what electromagnetic storage likes.

Vault, Mausoleum, hardly different.

At the other end of the scale, Aldi have just had some 300GB USB2 external drives in for £109...

And when your house catches fire your backup disks are stored where?

Vault, Mausoleum, hardly different, clearly I havent got a clue what either of them are but I just like pretending to know what I am talking about, when clearly I havent got a clue... and I also like changing other peoples quotes cos thats the kind o guy I am

Absolute, total and utter bollox. A 'Class 5 Military Spec Vault' as an example, is made of steel reinforced concrete which is assembled in panels and is not a solid metal room - sorry but you have been watching far too many films

While were at it, you say, "a large steel cell structure full of high voltage electomagnetic access systems" actually high voltage isn't present at all, all the control voltage is 240v ac or under, which isn't High Voltage. Most of the powerside is DC, but less than 50 volts, and the door is about 15ft away from the deposit boxes, so I don't think there's an issue there with excessive magnetism.

Yes the individual deposit boxes are made of steel but then again what have PC cases been clad with for the last 15 years? Vaults are designed not to become affected by magnetism for many reasons, most importantly because the if the vault electronics and mechanical system should fail due to the risk of excessive magnetism, there is no other way in than cutting through the vault door (5 hours of solid cutting, as specified by the Type 5 approval).

Many safety deposit boxes contain very expensive watches.. do you think people would deposit them if there was a chance they would get magnetized?

A harddisk is cased in metal exactly for that purpose - the range required to change the density of the magnetic flux on the platter is microns, they are very sensitive to fluctuations of tiny distances; that is why hard disks fail when they are exposed to open air. Because one particle of cigarette smoke is wide enough to stop the head from accurately reading the platter. To screw a harddisk due to excessive magnetism, the platter has to be in constant range of heavy magnetic flux, like an electromagnet or a Neodymium Iron Boron, permanent magnet. It's not easy to smuggle a magnet past the Banks' security, through the closed-loop metal-detector and the occasional body search, just in the hope that you can magnetize the lid of a deposit box incase someone stores a hard-disk in a bank vault

Next you will be tying to convince me that a bank vault is a Faraday Cage
