Been on wanadoo 1Mb for 9month and all fine until about 3 weeks ago.

Since then: poor connections, poor downloads, pages hang, browsers times-out (IE and FFox)

Tried: Avast virus scan c:\
Reset IE including cache and cookies.
Ran Spybot S&Destroy
Ran AdAware
Fresh modem drivers (Thomsen 330) from www.speedtouch.com
Switched filterbox/USB port/Wire-to-wall
Disabled Zone-Alarm
Spent 2 hours on 4 calls to Wanadoo 'customer service' No help and very poor service (based abroad)
Talked to BT who report no probs but clearly distance themselves from the 'unbundled' data side of my line

Any ideas? I know this is a car forum, but I respect any advice.

WTF happened in North Leeds 3 weeks ago because I CAN connect eventually, and my side seems fine. Aparantley my max linespeed is 1Mb.

There's a ride in my chipped 330d for the person who can solve it. (500Nm torque now)

ta, I've read some of this already from The Register. Helpfull but I don't understand much more what my solution is.

I talked to 'Anthony', 'Brad', 'Kevin' and some other dude in Asia/India (customer services dept, I kid you not) and they neither accept a probelm, nor help.

grrrrrrrrrrr

It might not be anything to do with LLU (especially if you aren't unbundled, and at 1Mb I wouldn't have thought you would be) phone lines can just deteriorate, if a bit of water creeps into a joint somewhere, or a connection oxidises, then it is almost instant. No amount of tweaking and twiddling by you or Wanapoo will get over it, you need to get Wanapoo to raise a ticket with BT and get them to do a proper line check. A friend of mine (also in Leeds) had his connection upgraded to 2Mb which caused all sorts of problems, and it took 4 investigations by BT for them to admit something was wrong and get his line fixed. 2Mb is now a stroll in the park for him with a solid connection and very few bad packets.

So, in short, tell your ISP to report it to BT.

You need get BT to carry out a Woosh Attentuation Test.
This will tell you the quality of the line. It needs to be <=45db to pass. Your modem may be able to tell you wether it is passing the attenuation tests but it is better to get BT to do it. It is possible to have a line which will only intermitantly pass the test. In which case you need the line replacing.

UPDATE:

Wanandoo support staff/you-want-curry-we-deliver reported a fault on my line and eventually said they had instructed the BT-Wanadoo line engineers to sort it out. (!!!)

They said they would ring when it was done

They didn't, but it works now and quite frankly I'm not going to waste any more time on the phone trans-continent to find out what they did wrong. (suspect Leeds LLU probs)

At one point a wanadoo man told me to get an IT man to sort my computer out, (phone call number 8ish) which I didn't becuase there was f*** all wong with my computer.

Yup, Wanapoo won't know what happened anyway, even if you got lucky and managed to get a UK call centre. Between them, BT and Wanapoo are a partnership made in hell. I'm tempted to go with BeThere when they offere a service here later this year. Surely it can't be any worse!
