Alert says mine is out in 28 days, but symantec's site for UK says my version

(XP-2004) is not available in this area as a £40 download.

should I buy another version (North America) say,

Or buy a CORRECT? shiny boxed version from PC world.

There's a good free alternative. Search for AVG Antivirus.

The last time my Norton asked for a renewal I asked on here and everyone recommended AVG.

AVG is good, but if you feel you have to part with cash, then go for McAfee. Look for the "Internet Security" version and you'll find it on the web for around £12 delivered.

Ditch Norton pronto.

I've just been forced to have it installed by our glorious IS department and I can confirm that my laptop no longer shuts down. I've had to press and hold the power button.

Useless, cack coding that proper s your PC. Anything else but Slime-antec.

Common problem mate - often caused by the floppy scan that runs during shutdown...

Start Norton --> Options --> Norton AntiVirus --> Auto-Protect --> Advanced --> uncheck Scan floppy disk in A: for boot viruses when shutting down.

McAfee's not much better, I personally would go with AVG and the free zone alarm.

If you're determined to pay, Kapersky Labs AV and Keiro Personal Firewall, both of which are very good!

I use AVG, spybot and the XP Pro firewall and it seems to do the trick

However my girlfriends laptop came with symantec(?) Norton internet security which recently ran out. To keep her happy and so I didn't have to spend my time un-installing internet security and installing another suite I updated to 2006 version of Internet Security.

Found an OEM version on Scan for about £27 (inc. VAT+delivered) compared to the online upgrade price of about £50. Apparently the only difference is you don't get the telephone support

one thing that is not clear about norton - will it keep running after the date but with an old definitions file?

Windows Firewall doesn't protect outgoing events therefore if something gets on your machine it can broadcast all day long.

Never had a problem, but I also have a firewall at my ISP and a hardware one on my router.

I'm also using my Routers firewall. I read somewhere that the Home edition or the normal Pro edition firewall was rubbish but then SP2 came out Microsoft fixed it. I might install Zone alarm...
