At home I have Nildram ADSL broadband (which my employers pay for).

I can connect to the outside world either from my loft (or dining room - but am getting a bit fed up of unplugging/rewiring my Intel Anypoint 3240 modem when I switch rooms (depending which is warmest!).

If I buy another identical modem (plenty for sale on eBay), can I expect that it will work with the existing software on my laptop, or does the modem itself have some software/firmware that would also need to be fettled?

Thanks in advance to any techies who know such things.

One of those things, it should work but the cold, hard hammer to the kneecaps of experience says 5% finger crossing might be required, which is slightly over the general ambient level of finger crossing required with these things

wireless??

I just realised, I'm currently staring at a small white box that says 'Intel AnyPoint DSL modem 3240 made in malasia with partial foreign content' on it.... it hasnt been plugged in for a few years so do you want it for free? Send me your address if so, neilgask@hotmail.com it can be my good deed for the day

Thanks for this Neil. I know exactly what you mean - my experiences are rarely anything but bitter with anything IT related!

My present laptop isn't a Centrino chipped one, so wireless is not an option I'm afraid.

If I can find someone on eBay not wanting £5+ postage for an Intel AnyPoint modem, I'll buy one & try it out.
