Hi all,

I've just had my grandma on the phone. she's been having major problems with here email account. With the first one, she was spammed - I don't mean a few penis enlargement emails, I mean 2000+ emails in one day, all sex related. Same happened with the second and third email accounts. My uncle (a web designer) bought a domain name with her name in it 3 weeks ago and set up an email address using that to try and stop the problem, but now no one is getting her emails (dodgy set up it seems). I have no idea what she does with her emails to get spammed so much, but I think its just down to bad luck.

She only uses it once ot twice a week to send emails to the vicar/her friends from church and to get pictures from family who live down 'sarf . Now however she's told me she want broadband and for me to set that up and a new email account to solve the problem as "you get what you pay for" (she's on BT pay as you go dial up atm). This seems way too expensive though for what she wants, as she barely ever surfs the web and only sends the odd email. Any advice on what to do? i thought about setting up a hotmail account with her initials and some numbers in the address and then linking it to OE - this has worked for me for a few years now and I've had very little spam. Any other ideas? she wants it sorted by me within 2 weeks!

Thanks

tycho

How about a gmail account? Free and I don't get spam in my inbox, it is all filtered out.

Hadn't thought of that, but can it be linked to outlook express? I need to keep things simple - she knows how to use O.E., anything more will take time to explain and will need written instructions

Hotmail sounds like your best bet, although to have OE interface you have to pay.

May be worth doing some checks for spyware/viruses etc on her pc aswell, may be the source of the problem.

Since when? I've got hotmail connected to OE, and I just found the settings on the web somewhere and did it myself, not paying anything! Am I not supposed to do this?

new accounts have new restrictions older accounts dont.

I think they do know that you are using OE tho as i get emails from MS from time to time letting me know how lucky i am to have an old account.

You can plug OE into gmail *I think*, if not you can certainly plug Thunderbird into gmail - and Thunderbird is very similar to OE, I'm sure your Granny will love it!

ETA if you need a gmail account invite let me know.

You can plug Hotmail (and others) into Thunderbird as well.

You can indeed, and I'd recommend GMail. The spam filtering is like nothing I have ever seen before.

Oh, and good on your granny. I've no idea how old the lady is, but getting my folks using eMail and t'internet is hard enough, and I am guessing that your granny is older than my mum!

I've got loads of invites as well 2 spare accounts - one with my full name in the email address currently used as a storage email account, and another I use for on here.

Set up a gmail account, tried to link it to OE but it didn't work. I think it was because I hadn't enabled POP3 forwarding so I have just done that from home (wouldn't work on old copy of IE!) so hopefully it should all work! Got paid £10 as well

Having more problems now - the gmail account won't connect to the server. Not sure why, I'm going round tonight to try and sort it out. I think it might be the software though - I can't change the settings on gmail as it doesn't support I.E. v5!

Any other options I can use? Try using hotmail or won't that connect to O.E. at all?
