Hiya folks, just got a new laptop and wondered if there is an easy way to transfer data from my old laptop to my new one without resorting to a backup/external hard drive. The fiddly things are favourites, address books and old emails stored on my computer. Both have XP so can I simply attach a cable to both USBs? Do I need to buy any software or does XP already have it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

Whilst I've never used it myself, there is a "file and settings transfer" wizard in the Settings tab of Accesories. I think this option takes all of your personal settings and transfers them to your new pc, making the exchange as seemless as possible. You can use a USB key to do this, or even a removeable hard disk if you have one. It also has an option for using a serial cable, but Im not sure if this is a USB connection or not. Personally, I would rather use the wizard to back things up to a hard disk/USB key so that I have a proper backup incase something goes wrong.

May be worth a try! Best to give it a whirl, and then test everything to make sure its all there before you get rid of your old pc...

Dan.

Thanks Dan I will have a play. I will backup the entire machine first and then give it a try. Cheers

Copy to a USB stick from the old one then restore to the new one.

Whereabouts in the country are you? There may be a PHer near you who can help.

In Yorkshire. Had a thought that I may be able to connect them with a LAN cable and then create a network and allow all files on my old machine to be shared with the new one. Fun, fun, fun on a bank holiday w/e
