I have a Netgear router, with Btinternet broadband.

Max speed when on wifi is 54.0 mbps. However this regularly start to drop from 54, down to 48 then 36 then 24 mbps.

Any ideas why the signal keeps dropping?

54 is a theoretical maximum, but pretty much impossible to achieve. Speed drops as you get further away, and signal decreases. Speed is probably dropping as you connect. 24 seems pretty good.

Well i can boot up, get 54 on the speed rating and then not moving anywhere it starts to reduce gradually.

its very weird.

They work by dynamic rate scaling. The network data rate is set and changes automatically as the quality of the wireless signal changes. You should get defined increments of:

54 Mbps
48 Mbps
36 Mbps
24 Mbps
18 Mbps
12 Mbps
9 Mbps
6 Mbps

Where are you getting the reading from? 36 is the best I've seen achieved in the real world.

i get the 54.0 from the wireless icon down by the clock (bottom right of the screen)

It does get very noticably slower when it drops from 54 and down.

Hi

I'm experiencing the same problem with a netgear DG834G even with the laptop 3ft from the wireless router. I'm new to networks so don't have the answers but I suspect my problem 'may' be the wireless card in my new asus laptop.

I have a USB adapter in an old desktop pc (a Netgear WG111V2) running win98se and that seems to have a 54mps constantly with a 90% plus signal strength (read from the Netgear wizard screen).

I have a couple of neighbours with unsecured networks and have linked to those (just to test) and again after a short period the signal drops and eventually says 'out of range' and searches for connections.

Also when networks are found it won't always connect to them on the first attempt.

Any advise

Thanks

Paul

Check your power management settings for the wifi device, set em to max power/aggressiveness or whatever else they call it per device...

Stopped the same from happening on my intel centrino dooberry (works kinda similar in linux too)
