Got a small problem, and before i start ripping the machine to bits wonder if anyone can put their finger on it.

Took down a server last night (2*2.6AthlonMPs, 1GB ram, MSI K7D). The server has run faultlessly for some time (430 days), but shut it down last night. Transferred the server to the new office, went to power on and just get a 2 second beep, and then it turns itself straight off again.

Though it was the bios fan (as it was shagged) as a light next to it came on, but thats been replaced now and it still doesn't want to come on. The system seems to think theres a memory error, but with two chips - i cannot imagine both being screwed (unless its in pairs which i hadn't considered).

Anyone got any suggestions before i rip the machine apart?

As you've moved the machine, could be as simple as the DIMM'S not being inserted correctly and come loose in moving.

First thing to check is that everything is inserted correctly, then if no luck, start at the beginning and see if anything has failed, unplug hard drives etc and leave the base minimum to get the machine to bios, mb, cpu, mem and graphics and see if it boots then, if it does its one of the peripherals add them in one at a time to check.

If it isn't I would guess some how the memory or mb has become damaged in transit, best way to test this is have memory from another machine to swap out.

Good luck!

the error code is pointing at the memory, which i find a bit odd. i've had the memory out and put back in to no avail. just to satisfy my curiosity i'm taking a spare 1gb chip i had lying around to try out instead.

if it isn't an onboard graphics card then check that its seated properly as the graphics card can cause a memory test failure.

Maybe pick it up, and walk backwards to your old office?

Reseat all the components.

If that doesnt work there is a website that decodes beep codes by mobo...

The journey wasn't that far, so I'm pretty sure its intact (it was in the boot of the car protected for a whole 2 miles).

I'll check the display card again, but I'm fairly sure I'm out of options on the board. I think that had I power cycled the machine it wouldn't of started up, and the travelling bit is a misnomer.

Doing a bit of investigating and it looks like the MB is a POS, so another single proc board has been ordered for the machine. Trying to find dual Althon MP boards nowadays isn't particulary easy.

I don't really fancy buying a K7D off eBay either just incase that board decides to die on me.

Just thought I'd post the answer to what the problem was. Despite my much maligning of the K7D board - it turned out that the PSU was shot.
