Hi Guys

I'm pulling my hair out. I've just installed a new HP DAT72 internal SCSI tape drive on a Windows 2000 Server. This is the only tape drive on the server. I've created a batch file and scheduled it to run, but at the scheduled time, the NTBackup GUI appears briefly then just disappears. The scheduled task runs as a domain admin so not a permissions problems, and if I run the batch file manually when logged on as a domain admin it does the same thing. I can find no clues in the Event Viewer and I can't find any log files. I know the tape drive is installed and working as I can use the GUI to backup and restore files to tape.

I suspect this has something to do with RSM but after a whole day googling I'm none the wiser. Can anyone give me an example of a batch file to backup a folder named C:\MYFOLDER to a blank tape, or is not that simple?

It was so easy on NT4

try running each command in the batch file by hand.. and ensure each command is fully pathed (the path variable might not be the same / set when executed by the system!)

This should help you diagnose where the problem lies and resolve it.

this works on 2003 but I don't think there is any difference on 2000

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntbackup.exe backup "C:\scripts" /n %1 /d %2 /v:yes /r:no /rs:no /hc: on /m normal /j %3 /l:s /p "LTO Ultrium" /um

The %1,2,3 are parameters passed from a calling script as it appends other jobs to the same tape so it needs the names etc to do this. You would need to replace your pool name to DDS 4mm I think

This will overwrite any tape in the drive at backup time

the /hc param has a space to stop smiley appearing

log files are stored in

C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data

Which might give you some clue why its not working

Thanks to all the excellent advice, I finally got this working today. Turns out I wasn't using the /p and /um switches correctly. Cheers.
