Been asked by a neighbour if I could transfer a video onto DVD for him, just wondering what I would need for that?

Check out the Maplin site, there's a new VHS to DVD recorder on the market IIRC it's about £140.

Is there a way of doing it via the PC, don't like my neighbour enough to spend £140 to copy their video for them lol

Firstly you'd need a way of getting the video onto the PC. I'm guessing that you haven't explicitly bought any video capture hardware, otherwise you'd not be asking this question. You may be in luck and find that your existing graphics card includes video capture hardware, or if you've got a TV card then that will do the trick as well. If not, then you've got a choice of external USB or internal PCI devices - USB is easier but may result in lower quality captures depending on the USB speeds supported by both the capture hardware and your USB ports. For basic capture hardware you don't want to be paying more than 50-60 quid from the high street, obviously less if you go online. You'll also need a reasonable amount of free hard drive space - between 2 and 13GB per hour of captured video, depending on what compression method the capture hardware uses.

Once captured, you'll then obviously need a DVD burner to create the disc. The last few I've bought for myself or friends/family have all been bundled with the cut-down version of Nero, which IIRC includes DVD video creation. If you need to buy a burner, 40 quid is as much as you should pay.

So, if you need to buy all the hardware, you're looking at maybe 80 quid, which would alternatively you a standalone DVD recorder which you could wire up to a VCR and do a straight tape to disc dub... Depends on how much of the hardware you've got already and whether you reckon you'd make further use of whatever hardware you need to buy.

Well I have a Xpertvision 6600GT TV SLI PCI-Ex graphics card, not sure if that can be used for caputring video though, have a DVD writer and software that I use to 'backup' DVDs.

By 'video' I assume you are refering to VHS and not a camcorder?

Unless it's a different card to the one that dominates page 1 of a Google search using that exact model name, then sorry, you're out of luck...
