This sort of thing
Hello Mr flashman, here is a possible solution. But first a quick tech lowdown on wireless router specs.
1) 802.11b 11mbps 10 metre range
2) 802.11g 54mbps 100 metre range
3) 802.11n 108-125mbps 100+ metre range
If your modem has an ethernet or network port just a wireless router will do. If its a USB one a modem router will have to be
purchased.
You mention you have victorian walls so option 2 or 3 seem the best due to having stronger transmitters.
The last option is to buy a telephone power plug transmitter. It works by using the existing wiring built into your house.
I.E. You plug the telephone / adsl socket into the sender 3 pin plug(just plug it into any power socket). It then sends the signal through your wiring to another 3 pin receiver to which you connect your modem to. Hence the modem bypasses the problem of
thick walls by moving the router closer to your laptop.
