After a years use Microsoft have decided that the copy of XP I am using is not genuine. Does this mean it will commit suicide on me? Should I transfer all data to the home PC from laptop? How long will they give me?

All help gratefully received.

Had this problem also. My version WAS genuine and I knew it. They have a new 'tool' which scans for pirated versions which they launched this week. They immediately offer to 'genuinise' you for $149.99. Nice scam.

If you have a couple of hours to spare and can stand the aggravation, they will eventually pass you right round the wonderful world of offshore callcentres then reactivate your XP with a new id code for nowt.

I HATE microsoft.

It might not be you, but it means that SOMEONE has pirated the copy of XP you were sold. MS don't just do it for fun, they have obviously had a number of different computers registered with your serial code.

Not true, there are instances where Microsoft get it wrong - just because they say your XP is fake doesn't mean it is. I would advise downloading all XP updates under "administrator options" and install at your leisure - and don't bother with Windows Genuine Advantage (the source of all the problems), as it epitomizes the word misnomer.
