We've been trying hard to get our website listed on Google, all the usual ways etc, and it's not showing up.

The product/company name is one word. Typing that in, we don't show up except for another company that links to us.

If I put the word in quotes, we show up second on the list, again, after the other company that links to us.

What are we doing wrong/how does that happen?

TIA

Google has been altering their searching criteria yet again causing many problems in the rankings for websites.

See the below article on the register for more information.

How have you tried to get your site ranked in google?, you need to remember it can be a long game to improve search results, sometimes upwards of 6 months.

Have you tried the free google tool to check on your rankings?

Some very simple google basics, which for a non-competetive term (something like a company name) should return a minimum of a top 5 placing.

Submit your site to the DMOZ - www.dmoz.org. Takes a while to get in but will help with rankings, getting you listed, etc.

Include your search term in...

"TITLE" tags.
keywords (debatable value but worth doing for completeness)
H1 Tags (if possible)
body text at least once.

For your company name, unless it's a common word (like eclipse for instance) you should be able to get top ten fairly easily, but don't expect results over-night, it will take at least 6-8 weeks to determine ongoing the effect of a change. Changing something can see an instant jump in the rankings but weeks later you might drop back to where you were.

As far as I know the "big daddy" change has calmed right down now, I know my rankings were all over the place for a few weeks but I'm back to top 5 for all search terms I target, and actually big daddy improved my rankings for a few.

We've done everything that dobbo says, except I only submitted to dmoz about 2 weeks ago. In all, we've been at it for about 3 months.

It's was just the strange difference between quoted and unquoted ot a one-word search that puzzled me!

The DMOZ is a human maintained directory of websites, which is fairly high quality because every submission is vetted to determine if it's appropriate for listing.

Google apparently frequently spiders the DMOZ to determine new sites and so on, so it's a fairly good idea to get in there.

There are categories for everything so you should be able to find something!

Some questions then... Are you using frames? Or redirects? Is your site primarily flash based? Is your code clean and standards compliant? Any of these in my experience can have a fairly substantial effect on rankings.

One other thing, make sure that somewhere on the internet, there is a page that links to your site in the format Pistonheads because Google gives higher ranking to incoming links that contain the search term.
