You first need to measure what load you use, peak load monitoring is usually a good call and from there you can call one of the many UPS companies (MGS etc) and they will figure out what you need and do a site survey, a lot do this for free.

There are some other considerations that you need to think about, how long do you need to run on UPS?, do you have a back-up generator?. Will you just run mission critical equipment on the UPS?, if so, how much power does each server/workstation consume on under full load?.

If you are unsure of any of the above it may be worth prospecting from external UPS suppliers, many will come and do a free site survey and provide a detailed report of what is required.

As above, find out the load of the equipment you want to run off the UPS (I think it's usually measured in watts) then find the appropriate device. A lot depends on whether you want to keep working, or just shut the machine down gracefully.

APC do a nice el-cheapo range which should give you enough time to shut down and will also auto-power down a machine if required, you'll need to spend a bit more if you want to carry on working.

APC UPS products

The 6 kilowatt one we use with a backup generator is a fair old bit of kit, several hundred kilograms of batteries, lots of fun to install! Still gives us 3 hours of up time before we have to start the generator, not too shabby!

Mine came with a serial cable to plug into the machine that's monitoring the UPS and a IEE mains cable. I made some IEE male to 4 way distribution strip adaptors so I could plug in all the stuff I wanted.
