Had too many beers to continue with this now but basically, disk 0 going bad.

First plan - replace with new disk, boot from disk 1, re-mirror. Disk 1 won't boot, looks like no boot sector on it. Don't want to f*** about with disk1 since its a good copy of all the data on a good disk. scratch that plan.

Second plan - ghost failing disk 0 onto new disk. Boot off that, check contents for up-to-dateness and re-mirror. It's a dynamic disk so ghost won't see it...

Third plan - raw sector copy of disk 0 onto new disk - takes many hours due to all the bad sectors but works. Boots half way... then the dreaded 'innacessible boot device'. c*ck.

I've got till monday morning....

NT Boot floppy?

Conceptually....

Boot from floppy, mirror back onto fresh drive, modify boot floppy to boot to new mirror on disk 0. Disconnect drive 1. Reboot and make new disk 0 bootable. Reconnect both drives, job's a good un. That way at no point are you writing to the good disk.

I concur.

Or...NT boot floppy, then once live copy all data onto another machine / disk, then once data copied, attempt to fix original machine by whatever means you see fit.

So boot disk 1 using an NT boot floppy rather than the disk's own non-existent boot sector... then re-mirror? Sounds like a good plan! One quick queston.... how? I thought boot floppies were just the same as booting from CD, i.e. install 2K or recovery console.. or are you saying use the console to make disk 1 bootable?

Any NT machine will do, it's detailed here

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/11946

You'll just have to faff about editing boot.ini

Always handy to know if you've got an otherwise healthy box that won't boot Got myself out of a few fixes with NT boot floppys over the years.

Funnily enough, when I mirrored disk 1 back to the new disk the new disk booted straight up with no further fettling Maybe if I'd put disk 1 back on the primary channel where disk 0 was it would have booted straight up all allong... oh well you live and learn!
