Hi all, I have recently built a system for the fist time (and it works, suprisingly ) I am running an Ahtlon 64 3700+ and under stress it sits at between 60-64 degrees. Is this too much? And if so does anyone have any recommendations for the best heatsink and fan combination?

Cheers

Hi wolves, I took this off of A.M.D.'s website:

AMD Athlon™ 64 Details
Processor AMD Athlon™ 64
Model 3700+
Ordering P/N (Tray) ADA3700DAA5BN
Ordering P/N (PIB) ADA3700BNBOX
Operating Mode 32/64
Stepping E4
Frequency 2200Mhz
HT Speed 2000
Voltage 1.35-1.40 V
Max Temp 49-71°C
Thermal Power 89W
L1 Cache 128KB
L2 Cache 1MB
CMOS Technology 90nm SOI
Socket Socket 939

I've got an A.M.D. processor as well and I put a Thermalake heat sink and fan on it and recommend them. It cooled my processor down so that even when working hard it usually only gets to 54 c or so. Be aware that A.M.D.'s are designed to work at higher temps than Intel processors.

Thanks Trooper, I should have probably thought to look on AMD's website myself

54C really is working hard! My overclocked dual core runs at 38-39 with 1 core maxed, 42 with both cores working hard. Standard heatsink/fan with no heatpipes or anything fancy.

BIOS software does vary wildly though, with some over-reporting and some under-reporting so a BIOS update may be in order.

I run an intel CPU, with standard heatsink it was making 70Deg C!! . Best cooler I have found is one from Arctic Cooling, based on a heat pump , now my CPU runs at a more reasonable 46Deg C - and thats running 100% load overclocked from 3 to 3.3 Ghz. IIRC the cooler was about £30 from www.overclockers.co.uk

I was getting 60 degrees with a 4000+ under load, with the additional side effect of the stock cooler rattling the entire case, so went to an arctic cooling freezer 64 pro. Now tops out at 50/51 degrees, and is a lot quieter - highly recommended.

My Athlon 3000+ Mobility runs at 72 degrees at load according to the AMD dashboard thingy (though this barely reaches halfway on the little needle scale thing). This is in my laptop though so I don't have a lot of scope for cooling.
Guess I'll have to take it apart and give it a good clean.

I didnt know you watercooled

My PC has been watercooled (in various ways) since about 2000, bar some playing with phase change on occations.

next time we crash out (or DQ) from a race we will have somehting to annoy everybody else with in the chat box now :P

i wouldn't like to do posh number crunching on something running more than 50/60C...

despite modern technology being more tolerant.

Yep, recently spent a load of money on huge passive radiator, and 4 heatsinks for all the various chips... It was done primarily for noise reasons, only to find out that the worst culprit was my power supply, so more money needs to be thrown at it I think... Plus the water pump has a very annoying resonance to it, so I need to either suspend it or put it on a bit of dynamat. The quest for silence is an expensive one!
