We have got a new office, and since we've had it we listen to the radio all the time. Not a problem, but our favourite station (Radio Jackie) suddenly pulled out a CD called Best Of Absolutel Rubbish yesterday afternoon - so we turned it off and listened to a CD.

Whilst we were listening to the CD, we had all sorts of problems with our wireless router. I ended up wondering if the CD player was the cause so we went back to the radio and hey presto a few minutes later the router started behaving itself again.

Again, whilst I was out, my staff tried it again. Once the CD was on, it created problems.

Anyone any ideas?

It may be that the CD player's chucking out enough RF to affect the router's electrickery. Probably the result of a loose connection somewhere. What happens if you switch on a radio at the same time as the CD player ? Lots of static ?

First port of call should be to check the plug for the CD player and, if it's plugged into an otherwise unused outlet, the socket too.

Here be nerds too

Edited to add: I'm presuming that the CD player and the radio are not the same machine. If they are, then the fault is likely to be internal and probably too difficult/expensive to mend.

PS. This has been moved here because this is where all the people who can help will be to read it, not everyone goes into P&P because of all the banal crap posted there.

Essentially its an LG home dvd system, with built in everything (CD, DVD, Radio, Aux, couple of hundred speakers and so forth).

CD - router screws up - and its on the other side of the office.
Radio - router is fine.

Very odd.

Try the trick with a portable radio. Detune from a station, so all you hear is hiss, then turn on the CD player. I suspect you'll get loud crackles, indicating a loose connection. An arc is, effectively, a wide band transmitter, dodgy connections are a frequent cause of all sorts of weirdness in sensitive electronics. It surprises me that the router is so difficult.

Another, rather left-field, thought is that the router itself may have a dodgy connection. Turn up a CD you enjoy, vibrate the shelf/desk the box is on just enough to shake its innards loose. If the first approach doesn't work, and if the router is a small desktop job, (stupid as this sounds) a blob of blu-tack under each corner might be enough to fix that.

the unit doesnt do crackling, its quite well screwed together and they are definitely seperate systems.

apparently, the neighbours did say that if you turn our radio up loud enough all the door speaker phones in the complex start playing whatever radio station we are playing??

OK, if playing the CD player doesn't make a seperate radio crackle, it's probably not a loose connection. Given that, and the effect your radio's apparently having, I conclude that your hifi is possessed by Satan and you should place you and your staff within a circle of salt, leaving money just outside the room you are in (the salt will provide a barrier, the money will tempt the Devil away from you)

Why, yes, I am all out of ideas.
