All my vid clips of kids wont open?
Discussion
When I open the folder where I have pics and clips of the kids the video clips that used to show thumbnails are black.
When I click on the clip to open the windows media player clip it just goes black and says morgan codec trial has ended and I need to buy codecs.
I dont remember installing a codec trial I downloaded windows media player 10 and that has not cured it. how do I get rid of this Morgan thing. is it a virus?

cheers
but arrrrg.
I installed and unistalled like it said on that page.
I now longer get the message to buy the codecs but the clips stay black and wont play on windows media player.
If I right click and open with quicktime they play so at least I have not lost all my irreplaceable files but would be nice to be able to see the thumbs not just black squares

Find out what video codec WM player is using (found in "properies" I think), then download AVIcodec (free program, very useful, here), find that codec in the list and disable it.
WM player should then use the next available codec which hopefully will be able to decode it properly. Had this problem a few times and this normally works.
Note that in the AVIcodec program, the codecs you are looking for probably won't be under the "video" codec list, but the "directshow" list. Good luck.

What is the model number of the camera? I'm betting that it used some sort of motion JPEG codec and that the "trial" for the codec in the camera software has expired...
...what file extension do the video clips have?
ErnestM
I take them straight off the flash card via a reader and copy them into a folder never had a problem before.
the camera is a canon power shot S40 I have owned for approx 2 years do they install trial software in teh camera and if it was the camera software would that not mean I cant open them in quick time also?
file extention name I think is .AVI

Do you have Quicktime? I believe it handles Motion JPEGS natively. I don't believe that WM Player does. Quicktime is a free download.
The AVI is encapsulating the Motion JPEG. You may need to convert it to another format. I have no idea which tool to use because I have never used motion JPEGS. I believe that the upgraded Quicktime (PRO about $30 US) will allow you to export it as a Quicktime movie...
Hope this helps
