design critique? I'm critisising around, pick what you find is useful
First of all, I like it. I really need to look for points to raise.
* Font used for the logo/top line: it looks like a geek's try to imitate some star track font. Find a nice sophisticated sans serif headline font.
* That user's login, put it somewhere less prominent. Everybody who logs in there has used it before in 99% of all cases. Use this prominent place to tease first time visitors
* That laptop, the bird holds in her hand; from when is it? 1988 or 1998? She looks better with a small 12" notebook. Big laptops are only bought because of their low price, and not because they mark attractivity.
* I like the docklands image above; it implies exactly the message you were distributing about UK housing with a good connection; however, it's a bit too dominant. Could do with eg. lower contrast and a little text in it.
>> * And where do you state that your computers run Linux? It's a selling point

I actually had the same chat with my developer about the initial font, and we eventually settled on Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif (in that order depending on what fonts you have installed)

Hmm, interesting.. I didn't want to make the page 'too busy', but I'll see how others react, and if there is a consensus I'll get some alternatives knocked up.

I sit typing this to you on a 17" WideScreen Laptop looking not dissimilar to that one.. I think it was chosen for a 'bigger is better' look.. I don't think a tiddly laptop would've looked as 'right' but I will mention it and have some options knocked up for beta. Bodo said:

The image actually changes at varying stages of the day to reflect the time of day (morning shot, evening shot and night shot!) It 'isnt small' but then on Lower resolutions I suppose it will appear larger..

It's a selling point to those who are in the know, to the less techy demographic it could worry them into thinking it's going to be all technical and hard, unlike their Windows PC.
We decided to try and keep it as user friendly as possible..
I do appreciate your comments, it's only with input that we can continue to improve things for our customers.
I'll print this off and chat with my developers tomorrow.

I'd take something less geeky like Akzidenz Grotesk or Frutiger...

AAh the banner text.
Well, I do like Startrek and I do like that

JB, I think the "search for a domain name" gets a tad lost in the Docklands graphic TBH...
Not a huge fan of bold AND red - "£49/year" - and must admit (this is a personal thing) I really dispise the use of exclamation marks, alhough I appreciate they make a deal look even better
Is there a nicer "bullet" option than :: ..?
Otherwise, looks sound.

I like it.
If I'm going to be totally honest
the previous site put me off a little. It seemed a bit "knocked together". If I was wanting to host pictures of my cat and list my favourite condiments in order, it would have been fine, but I'm possibly getting to the point where I want to think about professional hosting and I would have been put off by the original site (sorry!).
The new one I like very much. SO much more professional and if that's all it takes for people like me then fair enough! I didn't notice any of the points raised above (but that's not to say I disagree with them). The site works for me in terms of design/look etc.
for the redesign.
So... I'd like to talk about the hosting options you provide. Would a PM be OK?
Edit: Hang on, I agree with Podie - I can't stand more than one exclamation mark on anything "professional". Chat/emails etc. is acceptable but not in a public/professional context... that's 2p please.

That was the main reason for the redesign.. The origional site was something we cobbled together at the start of the project.. once the project hit 6 figures turnover we thought
we NEED a new website.. this one just doesn't cut the mustard. and here we are
