That 876ms interval is my wireless network card deciding it must change speeds - it will go from 54mbps to 48mbps, then 36, then 24, then it might jump back up to 54 or maybe not.
I have no idea why. My signal has 4 bars. I can't see a way to fix the speed - not even in the advanced tab of the network card properties in device manager. Does anyone else get this?
Also, if I disable or enable my wireless card, then for a second or two it freezes the PC whilst the hardware turns on/off. Should that happen? Perhaps this is related?

you can;t fix the speed, it's built into the protocol.
Is this consistent? connect high then degrade? If so I'd suspect iterference form somewhere. Try changing channels, and don;t leave your mobile phone next to the base station

You can fix the speed but it has to be available in the driver as an advanced property.
What wireless card is it?
Thanks I'll try changing channels.
It's a D-link, DWL-G520+
There's a "desired basic rate set" in the advanced properties where you can set things such as "1,2,4,11 mbps" and "up to 54mbps" and so on, but they seem to have no effect.
I think it might be a low level hardware thing - as I said earlier, when I disable the network card the whole machine freezes, music gets stuck in a loop and everything, for a second or so.

I've seen behaviour like this before, it's a bit unusual in that it's only one ping that is timing out, on my systems I had a problem where about every 30 seconds I'd get a block of 4-8 pings that would be over 1500ms, then everything wouldbe back to normal again.
As said above, likely it's interference, but unless you are really suffering throughput problems I wouldn't worry too much. One bit of advice when picking a new channel, go for something a bit obscure, I've moved some of my systems onto Channel 9 as every man and his dog is using the non overlapping 1,6 or 12.
