It would be funny if it weren't so dumb, just had to power down one of our machine rooms because the temperature was going up exponentially, it's not even hot outside! But try as we might, can we get it through to management that having an effective aircon system is kind of vital?

Can you explain it in simple financial terms? Cost of installing air conditioning = X. Replacement cost of equipment + cost of downtime = Y.

X < Y

Pay a little now or a lot later.

I'd book three weeks in Amsterdam if I was you!

I know exactly what you mean - used to go through it myself regularly. South facing machine room with the south wall windowed, one very small A/C cassette that hadn't had a service in years. Room used to regularly hit 45 degrees whereupon the core HP switch would shut down.

Couldn't even get managment to pay for reflective film for the windows let alone replace the A/C unit. Ergo - no network until the temp dropped. The penny pinching was unbelievable!

I think Cost of Replacement Equipment = Z will scare them. I mean, FFS, it was 36 degree C in there this morning, I've never had to power down an entire room in 20+ years of working in the industry. Mind you, I'd better not tell you who they are, their share price has taken enough of a kicking recently.

Trust me, that usually doesn't work either. I have rarely worked for a company that looks further than the end of their nose. If there isn't an immediate, obvious and substantial cost benefit, then forget it.

Didn't anyone notice that the machines were down?

Losing business is one of the quickest ways for management to realise the importance of investment in the right places.

We're the R&D site so it doesn't impact the customers/business immediately, they'll just notice later when new releases are "delayed".

Server rooms are great for that.

People look at me in a strange way when I walk into the building in the middle of August when the sun is cracking the flags with a fleece in my hand.

Plan B, tell them the air con has failed and needs urgent repairs to avoid putting the equipment at risk.

Or plan C, it's time for its annual (and surprisingly expensive this year) service.

Plans A, B and C are probably mutually exclusive ...

Disconnect the power supplies' connections to the motherboards, and show how the machines are dead because of the high temps. Either they fix the aircon, or they get new machines which also get the same problem...until the aircon is fixed.

We DID have it happen to a customer (we inherited them as a result of the failure due to no A/C). Three servers completely cooked. The cost of replacement and DR shook them up a bit

Price up all your kit, ask the MD for downtime costs per hour, add them together and you have your budget. If they don't give you the money and your kit fries at least you're in the clear.
