hi
as i've had this longterm problem where every week my pc decides to install its modem AGAIN, an thus bugger-up my internet access, till i remove the original+new driver/software, as they cancel each other out, an then reinstall one AGAIN!...

...i wondered if there were a simple generic modem i could install whose presence might block my pc's need to install a 2nd copy of the modem driver its already had installed a week earlier.

for it only needs to 56k fast.

Is it a USB modem? If so make sure you always connect it to the same USB port. If you already do .. erm, sorry, can't help.

No it isn't.
tho an odd thing i noticed about it this week, was when i went to install it again, tho a different way, the driver listing stated many intel modems, ending with a 537ep model, tho not mentioning my 536ep model, an so i now wonder if i've got one of those obscure modem cards that theres no proper sw for, an this explains why it only cost me £10 in 2000 as new?

or maybe its a poorly cloned pcb from korea

They are faster aswell, as most PCI/USB modems tend to be what is known as a 'soft' modem, basically some of the operations run in software, which slows your PC down. Whereas the external serial one is totally hardware based and focuses on its job and not interfering with your PC.
