This is how I understand it:

There is a border which appears around some flash files. I was told this is due to a MS update, and the problem is microsoft's fault.

This fault is generated when the latest service pack files are downloaded(?)

Someone hinted that microsoft may have done this on purpose, to upset developers and customers with flash products (ie flash on their website) Any truth to this?

Why does the border which appears around flash files not appear around all flash files?

Are there any fixes?

If anyone has examples of big sites which suffer the same problem, or an in depth explanation, Id be grateful as I have a client who isnt taking no for an answer and Id like to be sure of the facts.

This is Microsoft's response to the Eolas patent dispute. Interactive controls now have to be clicked to enable them. As I understand it, non-interactive controls shouldn't behave any differently.Apparently it is possible to work around the restriction, but I've never tried it.

www.actionscript.org/forums/showthread.php3?t=99785 looks like you are right

Looks like there is a backdoor embed solution, sorted!

Do you have an example of sites where the border appears. I can't say I've ever heard of this myself.

Loads/most of them.

www.bigstockphoto.com is one of many, check the flash file at the top.

However, you shouldnt be experiencing the problem unless you use windows and have automatic updates turned on, and have installed service pack two with the latest updates - ie, it doesnt affect everyone.

Got Auto update and SP2 here and it doesnt seem to occur with IE7

Unless you mean on hover, then it does.

On hover

Edited to add... necessitating a very laborious and frustrating double click to get functions to work

Is there not a CSS object border:none or similar that will override?

No real clue, just a thought.

Obviously don't have that patch then.

One more reason not to use Flash/IE

Do you do a lot of Flash stuff?

Any forms based action scripting or more specifically Flash remoting to a PHP back end?
