Afternoon all,

Any recommendations for a web host that does ASP and SQL db (mySQL also OK I guess), also support for email (cdosys or similar?)...

I'm with Brinkster at the mo (free personal account), but am a bit concerned about them being US based - would rather have UK, that way any 'service updates' will be at UK friendly dates/times.

I know JamieBeeston does hosting - but it semes to be PHP/mySQL, and I can't be @rsed learning anything new...

Finally, I don't want to spend too much, but the site isn't going to be handling massive traffic, or take up a lot of space.

Any suggestions / recommendations?

TIA, CH

ASP typically requires Windows, which requires Licenses which costs more which means it's not as cheap as Linux hosting.

There are plenty of places around offering ASP, but you WILL have to pay more for it!

www.IP1Hosting.net offer ASP iirc.

PHP isnt THAT hard to grasp if you have a good knowledge of ASP

As a warning there are some asp functions that just don't work under chillisoft, I'd get proper windows hosting instead.

Aye, I've used it since 1999, it works on a basic level.. but it's no match for a Windows Server.

I have a few Cobalt RaQ4's and 550's available, both of which support ChilliSoft ASP and have great Control Panels, but I'd say just go for a Register1 Dedicated Server with windows (http://Register1.net/servers.php ) as it will be the Real deal

Agreed.

The way I see it, it's a bit like a Brummie accent... it'll get you by and suffices in the simplest of cases, but it's not what you'd pick if you had a choice.

(Seriously, though - it's missing a bit of stuff, and all the COM objects you'll rely on for any remotely complex stuff are missing)

Chillisoft was make / designed in 1999, it's hardly new

The only real reason for it is for those who dont want to / cant pay for windows based hosting.

It's like an Automatic, it does most of the things a manual does... just more slowly.. and sometimes not quite like how you'd like it... and without clutch control

If you get stuck, give me a shout, by the way... I do Windows based hosting (ASP/ASP.NET) with SQL Server (Express edition to save on license costs unless required). I try to avoid "bitty" pieces of work, but if you're stumped at any point, just shout. I wouldn't recommend myself if this is a particularly small/personal site, though.

Express makes life so much easier for those who need to keep an eye on margins these days..

Where do you host JSG? Happily take it to email to keep it discreet

Yeah, unless you're talking 4GB+ databases, hardcore replication strategies, and so on, there's little benefit to paying full whack for it. Especially with Management Studio Express for free - fantastic bit of software... should pretty much kill MySQL dead for new apps on Windows for new entrants.

Don't mind keeping this online just for now... Currently use Fast Hosts for our servers - don't use any "advanced" services from them - backup, etc. - I make sure all that's managed. Had 3 hours of outage to one box in the last 6 months and I'm not convinced that was their fault. Hosting isn't what I primarily do, far more interested in value-adds around it (site optimisation, and so on) and development/branding, etc. but you've got to offer a full service in this day and age.

Fasthost unlimited bandwidth

Express is ok, you have to shut it down to back it up, but for the price

If you ever want to move up gimme a shout, always happy to give PH'rs a tour of the facilities and offices

Not interested in their unlimited bandwidth stuff - would rather have a decent throughput and offer a better service to customers - I just have it SMS me/someone else if the usage spikes unexpectedly. The contention doesn't seem too bad on it at all.

No need to shut down SQL Express to back it up if you play and learn a few tricks - the new SMO object model can do a lot of sorting out around that for you (assuming you're not deliberately locking connections).

If the tour ends up with a few beers, that might be a plan! Just shout if you want anything more indepth around my brain-half-switched-off weekend comments on your site, too...
