Sound separation

Does anybody know if it's possible to separate the sound part of an avi file from the video part of an avi file? If it is, how do you do it and what program do you use?

I think you can do it with a program called tmpgenc - but haven't used it for a long time so can't remember.

VirtualDub will do it with little fuss or bother...
