In the past I've used synctoy to sync certain folders on a laptop with another computer, is there something available for osx to allow me to sync a folder with the main pc?

I know I could run synctoy from the windows pc by would rather have something that I can run on the laptop.

Cheers

I use ChronoSync

www.econtechnologies.com/site/Pages/ChronoSync/chrono_overview.html

Can be a bit slow sometimes, but worth checking out the trial.

The commercial products will be the easiest to use, but may cost money...

If you fancy getting your hands dirty it's possible to use the unix command 'rsync' to synchronise two folders, they can be two paths in the root directory, you don't have to be running a SSH server on the Windows box.

How this would work - first set up a share on your Windows machine. The Mac can then mount this share in Finder using SMB, which is your bog standard Windows browsing. Once the Windows share is mounted on the Mac, it will exist in the /Volumes/xxxx directory, where xxxx is the name of the share.

You can then run rsync from that 'local' directory to a directory on the Mac. It'd be pretty trivial to script this up.

Apologies if you have no interest in rolling your own!

Actually OS X speaks 'Windows' perfectly (i.e. it has Samba installed on it). You might need to turn file sharing on in OS X but I think that is in system prefs somewhere (not sure, my imac is burried).

Share the folder.
Point windows explorer at the mac (i.e. type \ip.add.res or \hostname) in the address bar of Explorer (not Internet Explorer... it can and will spaz) and it should jump up and ask you for the username / password combo. Punch those in and you should see the shared folder avaliable.

After that it's just drag & drop. rsyncing is good if you want files updated/changed automatically but can be a right pain in the arse.

It's for 10GB + of photos and 15Gb of Music, dragging and dropping isn't going to work! The Syncronize! X Plus program seems faster than chronosync so has got the job :-)
