For about a week now when either online, or using a programme the screen will suddenly freeze for about 5 seconds then go black. Basically the computer crashes.

When I restart the computer i get a message insert boot disc etc etc.

This message can be repeated upto 10 times when i restart again and again, then all of a sudden the computer will restart normally and everything is ok again for a bit.

I have done an up to date virus check with norton and no traces

I have used the re boot disc to repair the systenm but to no avail.

Any ideas?????

Thanks.

Yup, definitely on borrowed time I'd say.

Might just be a dodgy connection; try unplugging both ends of the hard drive cable then plugging them back in again, making sure they're properly seated.

don't know if it is the same problem, but my computer kept freezing and going black, then it would come back for a bit, if I went online and put in a search, whilst the screen would be trying to bring up a new image the computer would go black, show a picture, go black, show a picture etc! This would happen continually especially if I went on the internet. It was worst when I first switched on and became very frustrating. It turned out to be my graphics card, the computer apparently was not "refreshing" itself quick enough. I have replaced this and the problem has gone. Hope it helps.

I would think as it's looking for a boot disk it's going to be the hard drive and not graphics

It apparently is the hard drive. Although windows has detected the problem now and told me how to possibly fix it, see link http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=31

Thanks for your help guys.

That just means that the problem is corrupting data on your disk. Chkdsk may or may not be able to fix some of the corruption, but it won't fix the underlying problem.

If it's a mechanical failure, the damage is likely to spread as debris is smeared across the disc. Get your data off it while you still have the chance.
