For one reason and another, I've just run about 30 metres of CAT5 UTP cable from the house up to the shed. Now being clever I thought I'd save myself any hassle by just cable-tieing the CAT5 to the electric fence cable that makes the same journey.

So there I am merrily stripping the CAT5 ends ready to crimp on the plug and I get a bloody great belt of a shock off the end of the CAT5 cable... funny thinks I, I don't remember plugging the other end into anything, then it dawned on my, inductance from the electric fence. Doh!

So, a little warning there to any of you who run long lengths of CAT5 anywhere.

I'm kinda glad I left the fence on whilst I did all this, I was going to turn it off. I wonder what my Cisco 803 and Linksys routers would've made of it all had I just connected them and then turned the fence back on?

At uni the accomodation was a big tower block. We had a co-ax/bnc run accross 12 floors. I'm talking accross halls, under doors, out windows, round the outside of the building back in, allong ceilings, etc. etc. you get the idea. Every now and then someone who wasn't online would get pissed off and take some scissors to the cable hanging past their window. It was a proper stickytape and blu-tac job. Amazingly, it actually worked and survived a few thunderstorms too, allthough you couldn't touch any of the bare metal of the BNC connctors without getting a nasty belt - which made adding new nodes fun

Oh mate, thank you very much for cheering me up, I think that is probably the only tekky
based story that I have laughed out loud too

Have you considered wrapping the entire cable run in tin foil, then shrinkwrap?!!
Maybe you could create some kind of aggitation device to vibrate the cable at exactly the required resonance to induce a directly opposing charge, thus neutralising the effect from the fence.....easy

Today I will mostly be a capacitor. Did something similar a few years back when I helpfully pointed out which bit of metal was at +25kV ... silly, very silly
