I am in a small bit of trouble..

NTLDR is missing, I have no HDD backup, no Floppy drive, the Windows XP Bootable CD seems to have no 'R' for repair option..

What can I do?
I can't write a CD, I only have this laptop, but I do have a USB Drive (however as far as I can see, my Bios wont let me boot from USB? Asus A8N-SLI Premium if that helps)
I have only one hard drive now so I can't just install Windows on another one then copy files across, or manually fix my boot.ini or ntdetect.com or whatever has gone wrong..

Otherwise, how the HELLLL can I get back and back my files up?
Preferably without buying a new hard drive, but that may be something I have to do if there is no other solution.

If you sling the disk in another machine you'll be able to get the data off.

Yeah it's just getting to another machine...

Also, where would I put the info after that? On a DVD backup or something?

Would be easier if I can find a another comp and manually repair the files... would I be able to do this OK?
ie. Add my broken drive as a slave in another PC, then copy over ntdetect.com and check my boot.ini??

and 'Doze should automatically fix the file system corruption that's more than likly caused it so that when you pop your drive back in your machine it's miraculously fixed.

Oh, and Neil, you're a bad man

Note that you'll need an adapter to plug your laptop drive into a standard IDE cable on a desktop.

Woah there.

Take a look at this:

http://tinyempire.com/notes/ntldrismi

That ought to do it.

Failing that, you could try selecting "Repair" from XP? That ought to do it.

Ah, lappy. Bugger, that does make it a bit more tricky. So when you boot from the CD do you not get an option to run the recovery console?

I can't see a Recovery console option, no..

The HDD is SATA2 aswell (just to make that clear )
I might be able to take it to a mate's house, and run it as slave..
So you mean if I do that, Windows will repair the drive itself as soon as Windows gets booted off his drive?

Stop laughing at Neil, you're feeding his ego

And yeah I tried the above link before posting here...

I can't get it to boot so it looks like USB is out of the Question...

It's on the first screen, after all the loading and starting biz - press enter to install windows, 'r' to use the recovery console, etc. etc. blah blah. If you've got a floppy disk with the motherboard sata drivers on it, have that in the drive and hit F6 when it tells you to.

Is this an standard XP CD or a 'recovery CD' with the makers name on it?

bizzare

if you proceed a few steps do you get a choice of where to install to or does it say no fixed disks present?

It loads all the files needed, asks about ASR, and any 3rd party RAID drivers etc..
Then all the partitions come up, and it just asks if I want to install Windows, delete a partition etc..

Installing Windows option gives no mention of Repair.

And yep, tried booting from the XP CD, and also the USB drive but that seems to be a no-go.

I suppose I can get a friend with CD-RW to burn me some kind of app off, and boot it instead of trying to use the Windows CD..?
As I would rather do this through Software/CDs than disconnecting my hardware and moving it about... that is really a last resort.

Dave.
