I'm trying to connect my Linksys router to the 'net.

I've got a static IP from my ISP.

My ISP specifies: PPP Type/Encapsulation: PPPoA (PPP over ATM) NOT PPPoE

My Router gives me the choice of

Static IP
PPPoE
PPTP
Heartbeat Signal

Should I be using 'Static IP' ?

Not all routers support PPPoA

Ah. So I can't use a Linksys WRT54g to connect to my ISP?

Have you tried PPoe?

I have a vague memory of chossing either of these (that they're inter-changeable). Can check when I get home...

could be talking guff. Just killing time until I leave the office!.... tick tock

Did you used to have cable broadband?

The WRT products are generally cable broadband based which would be backed up by the PPPoE connection method.

You could run the WRT in bridge mode and get another modem to do the DSL connection but its probably easier ditching it and replacing it with something like the Netgear DG834PN

Linksys web site doesn't list PPPoA in it's acronyms list:

www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Content_C1&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1116602180198&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper

so I think you may be out of luck

Ted,

I'll buy your WRT off you if you decide to ditch it and go with a new router.

Not to worry. Thanks for the info - you've saved me a hell of a lot of Googling!

It was just a case of fine tuning my setup to remove internet connection sharing.

You need one of these for DSL connections

WAG54G

You have this (used on Telewest/NTL where cable modem has an ethernet port)

WRT54G

You could run it along with a DSL "modem" but its easier just to sell it and replace
