Sorry if this is a bit of a daft question, but i'm a little hopeless with computers.

Every time i try to write a data DVD the computer wants to write it as a CD, despite the drive being a DVD-RW. I'm just using the send to option to shift it to the DVD drive, but it never gives me the option of writing it as a DVD. If i try to go around this and write it as a CD, it tells me the disc is full, which it can't be becuase i've just taken them out of the packet.

Its a Sony Vaio i've got, and i can't find any other tools or pre installed software for DVD writing other than using XP.

Any help would be much appreciated

Are you sure the drive is a DVD writer?
A lot of machines come with a combination DVD reader/CD writer drive you know.

If it really is a DVD writer, I suspect that the wrong driver has been installed. Look up the right one on the Sony site and download it.

I've got a feeling that XP doesn't support DVD burning like that, you have to have some separate burning software.

chriswright...

Nail on the head. XP does not support data burning natively (only CD burning). You need something like Sonic RecordNow! (about $39 US) to do DVD data burning.

Thirded, you do need extra software to burn to DVD with Windows, Look at Ernest's post above, I've got Sonic Record now as well and it's very easy to use, I highly recommend it.

I think you should lok again at what's pre installed. Even Sony won't sell a DVD burner without a utility to burn DVDs.

Found Sonic after a little bit of looking, trouble is it won't burn the DVD either, dragged and dropped the files over, keeps saying i need to insert an appendable data disc and try again. Discs are Philips DVD-R and brand new. Sorry to be a pain, any other suggestions?
