Hi

I've built a website for a mate, and have organised an 'info@' e mail account for him. If he were on a PC I could tell him how to use outlook to set up and start using mail... but he's on a Mac.

Is there a prog I need him to get or can one do it from inside the Mac OS?

Ta

If it's OS X, he can use the Mail application that'll be on his application bar at the bottom of the screen.

Start that up, then from the Mail menu choose Preferences, and then go to the Accounts tab. Click the little '+' at the bottom left to create a new account, and then fill in the same information as you would in Outlook (e.g. incoming server, outgoing server, etc) and you should be there or thereabouts.

Slight hijack, can you import outlook mails/contacts/etc into thunderbird, and also sync them with a phone or pda?

Thanks for that... Incoming mail is now working, but he's getting a strange error message when he sends... "must issue a STARTTLS command first"

I've never seen this on a PC - is it a Mac thing? Any ideas gratefully accepted.

Not familiar with that at all, but my Mac knowledge is easily exhausted

Haven't seen him for a day or two, but Magic Torch (no relation) seems to know his stuff.

IIRC, TLS means the email server is expecting SSL encrypted authentication when sending email. To enable this on the OS X Mail app, go into the Accounts pane in Mail Preferences, choose the account, and hit the Server Settings button in the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) area. There is a 'Use SSL' check box which you sound like you need. Unless your email server is doing something extreme, you should be OK with checking this box and choosing MD5 Challenge-Response as the authentication method. If you're using Kerberos then you'll know what to choose anyway
