for some reason limewire opens itself on start up despite trying to prevent it doing so in every way i can think of!, i ve gone into the advanced section of the menu and unticked the open on start up box, would have thought that would do the trick, but no, also unticked the connect on start up box but it still does it, it really is driving me mad!!

Get over to www.sysinternals.com and download yourself a coopy of autoruns. That'll tell you where it's being started from.

as i said in the other thread, you have a virus...

cant remember which one off the top of my head, but a pretty common one, and one of the features is it will open Limewire on startup.

Get your latest AV updates and run a full scan, should find it

i ran the startup program and could find no reference to limewire at all, and also ran a virus check and it came up with nothing.

If you look on the logon tab you will probably see something suspicious. That's assuming you've already followed fidgits advice about updating your AV.

couldnt see anything dodgy in the log on section, the only thing even close to limewire was a reference to java which limewire runs on, i unchecked it but it made no difference, i also checked that my av was up to date and it is, and i m not exhibiting any other symptoms of a virus at all, so the whole thing really is a mystery...

start > run > msconfig. Goto startup and untick there... You still need to remove the virus though!

i'd reccomend getting Norton on 30-day trial, update it, do a full scan...

if nothing turns up, just do a restore to yesterday (removes all trace from the registry), if it does, well bin AVG and get yourself a decent AV

Run task manager, double check what name the executable for Limewire is actually called.

had avg and was having hassles with virus that i guessed was present, but it claimed was free

now using nod32, updates hourly if needed and £54 for 3 years. norton is nice but takes up lot of memory

assume ur using a firewall and not just xp one ? agnitum outpost firewall do a free version as well as pro

MS Windows defender has a similar feature to the startup section in msconfig, and it is easier to see what applications you are preventing from starting up.

i got so pissed off with it ive junked limewire altogether as i just couldnt get to the bottom of why it was starting itself, now i run frostwire which is pretty much identical, i heard about it by chance on another limewire thread, how is it actually different to limewire?, its all exactly the same apart from the logo, the only feature thats really different is that it doesnt open itself on startup!
